Rock and Roll

I understood that Kurt used to play in a garage band with his buds from TC Williams. I know he played strings as a child (viola or violin, ukelele maybe?) but he didn’t read music. He could play guitar in the Spanish style though. If he removed anything from a case, it was his bass. It was never electrified but he has all the equipment one would use-amps and speakers, the works in closets and in the attic. Fred said his favorite guitar was am ebony Black Widow. Never once did I see that come into the light of day.  WHen I met him, Kurt had a piano, but he didn’t play. We also have a keyboard.  I think he was a collector of instruments since we also have an  urhu and a kalimba. None of our kids are musical….

I would really. really like to see photographic evidence of Kurt and his buds playing. I understand that Jimi Hendrix was a fave.

  1. Ah, the T,C. Williams garage band, or spare bedroom days! It was Kurt and Lee Jones on guitars, Big Al on drums and me, Fred, on bass. What a bunch of noise we made! To show you Kurt’s’ friendship and character, when we started playing, I didn’t have a bass, I was playing a borrowed guitar tuned down to sort of mimic one, which didn’t sound very good, as I didn’t have the money to buy one then. Well, one day Kurt shows up with a new Gibson Ripper bass, the blond one top center on the couch. He never said where or why he bought it, but in hindsight he got it for me to play. From then on, I had a bass! That was a class act, typical of Kurt.

P.S. to Sue, you are an angel for re-uniting me with that bass after almost half a Century, it brought tears to my eyes later on the night of the Celebration of Kurt’s life, thinking about all the good times we had making “music”. Kurt, you will be missed until we are all together again.
