WUVT Radio–Captain Hoodel Show

I found a cassette of Kurt’s radio show and my brother in law, Tibor, turned it into audio files to share with you. The show was supposed to be starting at 6 a.m. and go to 12 followed by Carol Dedman’s but apparently he was doing the party hearty thing and got there late. Spring Break? If you know the year, put it in the comments, please!

I think WUVT period was pretty important to him. He never missed Steve’s shows and made copies of them on CDs. He also had an app to get to WUVT radio on his phone.  We attended one of the WUVT reunions down at VT and actually had to bring our pet chicken with us to the motel (she had swallowed a  fishing line sinker and we had to shoot stuff down her throat with a syringe periodically to counteract the effects of lead). Weird story.

One thing I noted immediately is that Kurt did not sound the same as he did when I met him-and later. He is rocking a distinctive southern twang and regional flavor that he apparently shed over the years once he got to Texas. His family didn’t have the accent! I thought it was someone else speaking until parts of his voice resonated with me! So, answer the question, did Kurt have a “radio voice” or a VT voice that he assumed? Or was this young Kurt from Alexandria?

Here’s his show:

  1. Sue, having knowing Kurt as I have, I believe that this voice was a combination of a little early morning Saturday hangover and his DJ voice. He definitely is tweaking his voice playing DJ, I can hear it. Notice how his voice is much more “straight up” when he is doing Station or FCC information.

I remember visiting Kurt at VPI back in 1979. I did it for 2 reasons, one, to hang around with him, the second was to see “my” Susan. Great times! Oh how I remember that radio program, I really got Kurt into a lot of trouble one Saturday morning! I wanted to play a Tubes song, the live version of WPOD, look it up if you need to, but Kurt didn’t want to as it used a word you still can’t use. It starts with the letter F if you need to know. I told him no problem, I’d handle the mute button. He said nope, his show, he would, as long as I queued him in on time. Bad idea, we were both a little partied out from the night before and he didn’t pay attention when I told him to and the F word went out over the airwaves for all to hear. Oops! Didn’t take long at all before the trouble phone calls came in. He took the heat for it. He wanted to blame me, but agreed if I’d handled the mute button nothing bad would have happened as I knew the song much better! Another great memory that has come back.

Hearing your voice again for the first time since February this year, wow! Really hurts but I’m so happy to hear you again my friend. Missing you more every day Kurt.
